Wow. I'm loving this drama! This is still airing in Korea, so I’ve been watching episodes as they come out subtitled each week. Episode 13 is the last one I watched and it had a pivotal plot shift, making the remaining episodes ones I cannot wait to watch! Since their teacher, played by Lee Pil-Mo is more in my age group, I have to say…he’s making a positive impression on me. I think he’s really attractive and he plays these roles in dramas (at least lately) that show his high sense of morals and endearing human side. As for the youngers who play the high school students…gotta say, Yook Sung Jae, who was also in Answer Me 1994 is really adorable. I feel I can describe him that way, since he was born WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. (Ugh, I’m so old.) Anyway, I like his complex character, too. You really feel for him throughout since early-on, they show what a shitty childhood he had with his parent’s hostile marriage. I like that as the son of the head of the school, he can somewhat position himself favorably to help push his crummy father along to make better choices. There was a hint of that in the last episode, but we’ll see…
Anyway, initially I wasn’t all that attracted to watching a drama that centers around high schoolers, but the plot is just “adult” enough that even I can enjoy it and not find it too eye-rolling with it’s story line centered around teenagers. Their problems are in fact quite realistic. I don’t know much about actual bullying in Korea, and how common it is, but it certainly is a problem in the USA and can lead to suicides here as well. I feel like the writing could be more developed in handling the severity and seriousness in suicidal behavior, but meh…this is where Korean culture in general feels lacking to me. A general glossing over of a terrible reality for some people in this world is not good. Nonetheless, the drama has sucked me in and I look forward to seeing what will happen next each week. I’ll rate it once it’s over with, but for now, I would say this is a must watch.
See the complete list of dramas I've reviewed here.
Soju (1) | It had me coming back for more, but left me with a hangover. Worth it in the moment, but slight regret the next day.
Kimbap (2) | It moved well and often left me wondering what would happen in the next episode, but it wasn't as fulfilling as it had the potential to be.
Bibimbap (3) | I lost a lot of sleep because they knew how to end each episode with a cliffhanger! Lots of harmonious ingredients making this one a win!
Fanatic (4) | An amazing drama that was very well told and nearly every single episode ended with a major cliffhanger making you scream for more! I'm an absolute fan!
(I only put on here the dramas I actually recommend because I think it's really good. Even a soju rating means it was good and satisfying. A fanatic rating just means it blew me away and was near perfection. There are many dramas I've seen that I don't have on my recommendation list.)
