Addictive Rating: 4/4 (Fanatic!)
Synopsis: This is a time travel with alternate universe plot. A man is miserable in his marriage as his wife grows increasingly more angry and less pleasant to be around. Instead of examining what he could do differently as a husband, he takes the "easy way" out and decides to use a special opportunity to go back in time via a mysterious toll booth. He changes a pivotal day from his past, and bam - he wakes up in 2018 next to his college crush, an attractive, wealthy and high maintenance wife. Over time, we see him in this alternate universe marriage and while at first, it seems wonderful, of course it turns out to be full of challenges as well - just different challenges. Meanwhile, his actual wife from his real life, the one he originally lived comes into his life again - only this time she's not nearly as angry. They are colleagues at a bank and he finds himself doing things for her because it's obvious he still loves her. The story continues to unravel from there...
What I have to say: This is a somewhat formulaic "go back in time" fantasy drama. It's not realistic, but that's why I watch dramas. To imagine what can't actually happen in my life. I would be lying if I told you I never once considered altering my own past to possibly have a "better" life now. I loved that in altering his future, he was basically more miserable with the college crush wife. It goes to show that the grass is never greener on the other side, and that often in life, what seems better only seems better because we don't know enough to recognize what really is. The acting was awesome, and the writing kept the plot moving along at the speed I like - which is not killing the drama with useless scenes. While this is a fantasy-based drama, the story line was otherwise very realistic and relatable for anyone who has experienced challenged marriages in their lifetime. Unlike many dramas that end with the happy ending, this one also went on for 2 episodes to show more of what that "happy ending" really means.
See the complete list of dramas I've reviewed here.
Soju (1) | It had me coming back for more, but left me with a hangover. Worth it in the moment, but slight regret the next day.
Kimbap (2) | It moved well and often left me wondering what would happen in the next episode, but it wasn't as fulfilling as it had the potential to be.
Bibimbap (3) | I lost a lot of sleep because they knew how to end each episode with a cliffhanger! Lots of harmonious ingredients making this one a win!
Fanatic (4) | An amazing drama that was very well told and nearly every single episode ended with a major cliffhanger making you scream for more! I'm an absolute fan!
(I only put on here the dramas I actually recommend because I think it's really good. Even a soju rating means it was good and satisfying. A fanatic rating just means it blew me away and was near perfection. There are many dramas I've seen that I don't have on my recommendation list.)
