Addictive Rating: 4
Synopsis: Another coming of age story similar to the first two focusing on 1997 and 1994. New actors, characters and setting, but in my opinion, even more heartfelt than the first two. Why? Because this one focused far more on the entire family and community in which the teenagers are being raised in. There's just far more screen time on all the characters and I absolutely loved that.
What I have to say: I felt like I was on a time machine, pulled right into what must seem like now a very "pre-historic" time for urban Koreans. I loved seeing the simplicity of the late 80s and relating to much of it despite being raised in the USA. Waiting by the phone so it wouldn't ring more than once because it was a friend and you didn't want your parents to wake up. Or, not having cell phones to communicate on your whereabouts and then having mix ups. Less globalization and influence from other countries still existed in 1988 Korea. The finishing touches making one feel like they really got that time period right is magical, but it's the people in the story that make you watch episode after episode with an eagerness that I haven't felt in a long time. It was far from boring to watch these peoples lives unfold and the ending was actually quite deep and sad in a way that it brought truth to the fact that change is always happening and it's part of our lives. Places and spaces only are what they are because of the people who make them great. I'd consider watching this one again and I don't say that often.
See the complete list of dramas I've reviewed here.
Soju (1) | It had me coming back for more, but left me with a hangover. Worth it in the moment, but slight regret the next day.
Kimbap (2) | It moved well and often left me wondering what would happen in the next episode, but it wasn't as fulfilling as it had the potential to be.
Bibimbap (3) | I lost a lot of sleep because they knew how to end each episode with a cliffhanger! Lots of harmonious ingredients making this one a win!
Fanatic (4) | An amazing drama that was very well told and nearly every single episode ended with a major cliffhanger making you scream for more! I'm an absolute fan!
(I only put on here the dramas I actually recommend because I think it's really good. Even a soju rating means it was good and satisfying. A fanatic rating just means it blew me away and was near perfection. There are many dramas I've seen that I don't have on my recommendation list.)
