There are supposed to be 20 episodes of Birth of a Beauty, and I've finished 15 of them. I wait for Drama Fever to come out with the subtitled episodes each week. I can't binge watch episodes when I watch dramas that are airing in Korea, but given my life as a full time working mother that is trying to pace myself, it's probably for the better that I watch dramas that force me to space out the episodes!
Birth of a Beauty has kept me pretty captivated since episode 1, and at 75% completion, I'd say it's a good one. Unrealistic that plastic surgery would change someone's appearance that much? Yes, but that's the point of fictional dramas. To stretch the truth and imagination a bit just comes with the territory of trying to be entertained. I think the plot and the dark characters getting what they deserve is what keeps me tuned in because I can't wait to see the bad guys go down into a heap of dust. Right now in episode 15, all the worst stuff imaginable is happening so that then bit by bit things can get better...at least that's what I predict will happen. They just left us with the cliffhanger that the main guy may have died (sorry I'm spoiling the plot, but I never said I'd eliminate plot spoilers). I'm highly doubtful that he did, and am impatiently waiting for episode 16 to come out!
Overall, I'd recommend this one for sure. If you hate the plastic surgery industry with a passion and hate the idea of unrealistic makeovers, then don't watch it...but if you can accept that this is part of the plot and quite frankly, part of South Korea's superficial culture, then it's a good watch to see how the main character evolves. I think there is some truth to be said that a person does change on the inside when they change on the outside. There is something to say about losing weight and being considered more attractive that can raise one's confidence. Sure, people can be overweight and be confident, but I'm not going to deny that looking better can also make a person feel better. The two go hand in hand more than we'd like to admit.
Anyway, I digress. The main focus of this drama isn't even on looks and beauty, but more on the plots and subplots of conspiracies and hopefully seeing the wrongdoers get served a nice pile of shit by the end of the drama! Which will be so satisfying.
See the complete list of dramas I've reviewed here.
Soju (1) | It had me coming back for more, but left me with a hangover. Worth it in the moment, but slight regret the next day.
Kimbap (2) | It moved well and often left me wondering what would happen in the next episode, but it wasn't as fulfilling as it had the potential to be.
Bibimbap (3) | I lost a lot of sleep because they knew how to end each episode with a cliffhanger! Lots of harmonious ingredients making this one a win!
Fanatic (4) | An amazing drama that was very well told and nearly every single episode ended with a major cliffhanger making you scream for more! I'm an absolute fan!
(I only put on here the dramas I actually recommend because I think it's really good. Even a soju rating means it was good and satisfying. A fanatic rating just means it blew me away and was near perfection. There are many dramas I've seen that I don't have on my recommendation list.)
